Such a big week for me! My friend got married, another competed in an IRONMAN (if you don’t know what that is, it’s basically an even tougher triathlon. She was exercising for over 12 hours! I happily cheered along on my rightful place along the sidelines) I had an interview and I was nominated for a Liebster Award!
Psst: That’s not all. I have big big news that I’m so excited to share with you all… Stay tuned! But until then…
What’s a Liebster Award? Basically it’s a way of celebrating “up and coming” blogs and sharing the love. I was thrilled when Sandie (and later Merrit!) nominated me! Thanks girls :) I’m looking forward to discovering all the new blogs that this awesome little project brings up.
How does it work?
Once you’re nominated, there are a few things to follow up on:
1. Thank the person who nominated you and share their blog with your readers.
2. Answer your nominator’s 10 questions.
3. Nominate another 10 bloggers for the award with less than 200 followers. (This was the best part for me. I’ve already discovered a few new ones that I’m excited to catch up on!)
4. Write 10 questions for your nominees to answer.
5. And of course, let them know you’ve nominated them on their own blog!
Here are my nominations!
1. Who or what made you take the decision to create your blog?
Hmm… There were many reasons really. For one, I had tried blogging before but totally failed because I was blogging about a subject that wasn’t true to me. But then one of my favourite writers (who is also a blogger) Gretchen Rubin reminded me to “Be Lauren” and I realized it wasn’t because I didn’t like blogging, but the topic of travelling was something I thought was for some reason “worthier” than design and DIY. Once I shed that idea, I opened up to the whole blog idea again, and I’m so happy I did!
Who inspired me to take the plunge? Young House Life of course, but also IHeart Organizing and the one and only recipe blog I follow, Table for Two. (She had tried a couple blogs before finding the right topic. If Julie can do it, why not me?)
2. What do you like most about blogging?
One of my favourite parts about blogging is that it forces me to stick to a project. I love starting new things, (as one can tell by my resume) but I admittedly need extra motivation to finish them!
3. Who is your intended audience?
As much as I’d love to appeal to a large group of people in lovely “established” homes, that’s not where I’m at, so I couldn’t possibly write for that audience. I’m settling down, but my home is very much in the beginning “nesting” stages. I hope to write for people who are anywhere from just starting out in their first place to creating a home and family. Above all else however, I hope to inspire renters like me!
4. What do you enjoy most about blogging?
I love reading other blogs. There’s something so intriguing and personal about reading someone else’s story and experience rather than leafing through the pages of a perfect and staged glossy magazine. When I’m in need of inspiration or motivation to tackle something in my house (especially if it includes cleaning and organizing) reading other blogs is my go-to!
5. What do you enjoy doing when you are not blogging?
I am a complete coffee addict so one of my absolute favourite things to do is to go out with a friend to a neighbourhood coffee shop. One of the main determining factors of how much I enjoy a city rests on how much I like its coffee shops!
And of course, as corny as it sounds, I have to mention how much I love spending time with Shaun. Whether we’re cooking, dancing in the kitchen, going out or just hanging out at home with him in the same room, I’m so happy whenever I’m with him.
6. What is your favourite blogging time/environment?
I love mornings (unusual I know, but it goes hand in hand with my love of coffee). I love feeling like I’m getting things done, and in the morning I relish in having the whole day ahead of me. If I’m not working, I take full advantage and sit happily in my arm chair and write! I usually blog in my little corner in our living room, but if I have the time, I love hitting up a favourite coffee shop in Vancouver.
7. How do you plan your blog posts?
That varies greatly. I try to have all my projects (or at least the supplies needed) on the weekend, write and edit the post the day before, and schedule it the next morning (after a final edit before work).
My usual structure is a DIY/design project on Mondays, an organizing project on Wednesdays, and a favourite finds or special tips post on Fridays. That all depends on what I’m working on though… Sometimes I have posts planned well in advance (especially when I’m participating in something like a Pinterest Challenge or AT’s Style Cure) but most of the time, it follows whatever I feel like working on in the moment!
8. What is the one post you are most proud of?
I think my post about our mail sorter would have to be my favourite post. Not because it was especially well written or that the photos are that spectacular (because they aren’t. I don’t have a speck of natural light in our entry way) but because it’s still working for us (I hardly have any paper clutter on my tables any more) and because I’m constantly surprised by how many people check it out! Who knew mail sorters would appeal to so many people?
9. What are two tips you would recommend bloggers to keep in mind when writing a post?
For one, copy your post into word when you edit. It’s not a perfect editor, but it will help you catch the odd missed word or misspelled homonym. I always seem to have a simple overlooked error or two in each post!
The second one is a matter of opinion, but I much prefer larger photos over smaller mismatched ones in a post. I think large photos (with a consistent width size) tell your story so much better and look much more professional.
10. What are your top 5 most inspirational blogs?
This is definitely my favourite question!
I ADORE I Heart Organizing. Jen is adorable and her ideas are so useful. Her style has honestly changed the way I organize day-to-day things.
Style-wise, my favourites are Sarah M. Morsey Designs and HOUSE*TWEAKING. I would say my ideal style is a cross between those two! Sarah especially hits home because her place is a rental too (I was SO surprised when I realized that) and Dana’s is what I hope my home could one day look like (when I’m hopefully more established in my career!)
You can’t of course answer this question without mentioning Young House Love. As much as their stuff isn’t always my style (I prefer more neutral and less quirky for my own home) they have such fabulous ideas and are so much fun to follow!
As a wild card, I’ll add in Manhattan Nest (which really, is a misnomer because they currently live in Brooklyn). He started out as a renter too, which got my attention, but what kept me? His humour. Let me tell you, the man is HILARIOUS. I read his (admittedly uber long) posts and I’m always left laughing. A great read if for nothing else than the laughs, but his design style is fabulous too!
Phew! I had some long answers. Now, for my nominees, here are my questions!
1. What is your favourite part about blogging?
2. What is your least favourite, most disliked and dreaded part about it?
3. How much time does it take you to finish a regular post? (Prep time, project time, photo editing, the works.)
4. If you could change something about the choices you’ve made so far for your blog, what would it be?
5. What turns you off a new blog right away? (Your blogging “pet peeves” if you will).
6. Likewise, what makes you stay?
7. What goal(s) are you working towards on your blog right now?
8. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing and snapping photos?
9. What tips would you offer other bloggers?
Thanks again for the nomination Sadie and Merrit! I’m looking forward to learning about all you new bloggers out there too :)
