You may remember a little while ago when I said I had big news… Shaun and I are engaged! It was the perfect proposal and I just had to share it.
Everything was planned to a tee. Originally, my mom and I were going to visit my brother on Vancouver Island that week, but he cancelled last minute and told us he would come to visit us on Tuesday instead. Suddenly, my week was unusually free. Luckily, on Sunday my girlfriends suggested we go out for dessert the following day. One just happened to have a gift certificate from a family friend to a very high end restaurant surrounded by a gorgeous park in Vancouver, Queen Elizabeth… It didn’t seem at all unusual, since she’s always been so generous. “We can wear dresses, have some wine…”, they enthused. I was in!
The following day, I made dinner, vacuumed (since they were supposed to be coming over afterwards), quickly threw on a dress and touched up my make up. As I headed out the door, my boyfriend joked, “Can I come with you?” dressed in sweats with his usual bed head hair. “Yeah right.” I assumed he would have his usual evening on the couch playing video games. Instead, he raced around as soon as I left to get everything organized in the park…
Meanwhile, we had a wonderful dessert and wine (crême brulée, my favourite) and laughed all evening. It was one of the best times I’d had in a while. I remember looking around and day dreaming that it could be a great wedding location…
After we ate, my friend P suggested we go into the gardens and take photos. Being the instagram addict that she is (I mean really, she’s been pushing us to take photos since we were 12) I thought nothing of it, besides the fact that they were making me walk in very high heels.
All of a sudden, I heard singing. Strange… As we came closer, I realized it was a guy on a microphone singing Elton John’s “Your Song”. Despite that this is our song, I was convinced it was someone else. In fact, I thought it was someone else proposing and secretly wanted to watch!
Imagine my surprise when I turned a corner and saw my future sister-in-law and her husband, each with a callalily in hand. That’s when it finally hit me… This was my proposal. Shaun had promised it wouldn’t happen for the next few months!
As they gave me their flowers, I looked a little further to see Shaun’s other sister, her baby daughter in her arms and her husband with a callalily each. I continued to find Shaun’s parents, my dad and his girlfriend, my close family friends, my brother and my puppy, my mom and my best friend… Each holding a flower with special meaning for Shaun and I. He gave me callalilies when we first started dating, lilies as time went on, and orchids for special occasions. Almost everyone was dressed in a pink or white top… Even Bali had a pink bow on her head!
It started to sink in, but Shaun had yet another surprise. Further along the path, a hidden photographer was taking pictures of the whole thing. Amazing.
It was such a surprise… Surreal. I was shocked, elated and laughing at Shaun’s fabulous singing in the park.
There’s my brother beside me. He cancelled on me last minute to ensure that I was free that week! I was so touched that he made it out especially for my proposal. Oh, and that gift certificate my girlfriend had? I found out later that of course Shaun had footed the bill.
As I collected my flowers, my friends and family followed me down the path. After weeks of planning, you can tell who my best friends are because they’re the three with the biggest smiles on their faces!
I followed the path lit by tea light lanterns (Shaun knew I’ve been obsessed with them for white a while), and turned the corner to see Shaun beside a waterfall dressed in his suit and tie.
I’m so glad Shaun had these moments captured on camera because honestly, I was so elated I couldn’t even clearly remember him down on one knee!
It was so wonderful sharing the moment with my closest family and friends. We shared champagne, and even my man-of-few-words father gave us a toast. I can’t even begin to describe how elated I felt. I didn’t want it to end!
So there it is! Our engagement story. I feel a bit strange (like I’m boasting) sharing it all, but I know I love reading other stories like this. If you have one to share, I’d love to hear/read about it!
I know my posting has been a bit erratic this month now that I’m back at work, but bear with me! I found a fabulous chair that I cannot wait to recover and show you guys…
